Histamine: More than allergies

If you’ve heard that an antihistamine approach can relieve symptoms of PMS or perimenopause, that’s because histamine is a neurotransmitter.

And according to new research, it’s most active in brain regions associated with emotional regulation, stress and fear responses, decision-making, impulsivity, reward, sleep, and memory.

New research, from King’s College London and the University of Porto, has mapped the histamine system in the brain. Histamine, a molecule more commonly associated with allergies, plays a separate but poorly understood role in brain function. This study addresses this gap, building the first multiscale map of the histamine system which spans from genetics to behaviour and related mental health conditions.

There are many avenues that can raise your histamine levels:

  • foods that are naturally high in histamine
  • foods that release more of your own body’s histamine
  • foods that block clearance of histamine

and all the above will be exacerbated if you have a genetic polymorphism affecting histamine clearance.

Lara Briden shares how higher histamine can affect peri-menopause https://www.larabriden.com/high-histamine-can-make-for-a-tougher-perimenopause/
