You’ve heard of probiotics and prebiotics. But what about post-biotics? If you haven’t, you soon will.
As with most research, there’s usually a pill in there reflecting the most recent findings.
But what are all these ‘biotics’?
Probiotics relate to the good bugs in our gut. Our microbiome. The millions of microbes that inhabit our body (yes, not only the gut) which help us digest and utilise nutrients from food, keep us healthy, support immunity, and protect our skin.
Prebiotics are fibres found in fresh foods – fruit and vegetables – that nourish our microbiome.
Postbiotics are the metabolic by-products of our microbiome. If our microbiome is varied and healthy, these by-products are beneficial. On the other hand, if your body’s microbes are out of balance and include the ‘bad’ ones, their postbiotics will not be beneficial.
So, how can you ensure all biotics are in order? The usual –
* eat a varied, fresh, whole food diet
* avoid processed ‘food’ imposters
* avoid excess sugar
* avoid excess alcohol
Some postbiotics are emerging as promising therapeutic agents for Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) – what used to be called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.
Ensuring your internal environment is balanced and conducive to maintaining the healthy microbiome is the best approach. But if you need a little help, then consult a G.E.M.M. Accredited naturopath.
